Vacation Sex: Prepping for Better Intimacy While Traveling

Vacation Sex: Prepping for Better Intimacy While Traveling

by Team Champ - July 31, 2025

You can’t deny the magic of vacation sex. Maybe it’s the novelty of being in a new place, or the relaxation that comes from taking time away from daily stressors, but one thing’s clear: vacations present an opportunity to make memories in the bedroom (or hotel room). But great vacation sex doesn’t always happen effortlessly—preparation is still key. Let’s explore some of the ways you can set the stage for awesome sex abroad.

Why Vacation Sex?

Never underestimate the power of a new environment – new sights, sounds, flavors activate our brains in powerful ways. According to Dr. Aliyah Moore, a licensed sex therapist, "the novelty of new surroundings can stimulate the brain, leading to heightened arousal and excitement."

But it’s not just about novelty. Vacations give us a chance to recharge, away from work alerts, to-do lists, and chores. While relaxing on vacation, people often experience lower levels of cortisol (the stress hormone) and elevated oxytocin (a happy hormone). This primes our brains for not only enjoying our downtime more, but enjoying our partners more too. In fact, science supports what feels intuitively true: that doing new things with your partner deepens intimacy. A 2024 study of couples found that “self-expanding experiences”—think adventurous or novel activities—predicted increased post-vacation sex, passion, and overall relationship satisfaction. In other words, new and fun experiences can really set the mood.

Pre‑Trip Prep Checklist

Now that we’ve sold you on how great vacation sex is, let’s talk packing and preparation.

Before You Pack

No surprises here—talking about sex is crucial. Talking to your partner about what they want out of your alone time helps couples have more enjoyable intimate experiences while traveling. Having a conversation up front about what each of you wants will make planning all the more simple. This is also your chance to talk about boundaries for work or family while you’re on vacation. Make sure you’re clear on each other’s expectations for things like answering work calls, email, or other distractions. Put those out-of-office alerts to good use so that you safeguard your alone time as much as possible. After all, the last thing you want is to be interrupted by a wayward ping when things are heating up.

Pack for Pleasure

Once you and your partner are on the same page, start thinking about the items you’ll bring along with you. Here are some questions you can ask yourself to make sure you’ve covered all the bases.

  • Where will we be staying? Will we have easy access to a shower, towels, etc?
  • Make sure you’re aware of what you can (and can’t) take with you on your road trip, flight, cruise, etc. Things with batteries or liquid might be restricted depending on your method of travel.
  • Is there a sexual bucket list item you can check off during this trip?
  • What supplies or toys do you and your partner love that you can pack ahead of time?
  • Is there an opportunity to surprise your partner by gifting them something?
  • Do you have the right equipment? Don’t forget your sex essentials like lubes and condoms.
  • Are there stores in the area where you can pick up any items you aren’t able to pack?

Set the Scene

Even while traveling, the atmosphere is everything. But creating the right mood starts way before you reach the bedroom. Ask yourself what new and fun activities you and your partner can experience together while you’re in this new place. Try something new depending on your location. Even something as simple as an evening stroll or a walk on the beach can set the perfect mood for sex and intimacy.

Go With the Flow

Once you’ve reached your destination, keeping an open mind can help maintain a fun and sexy atmosphere. Let curiosity guide you. If something feels fun—go for it. Try not to get too caught up in plans and itineraries. If you and your partner prefer having some morning fun instead of going on the early hike you planned, that’s okay! Try to keep plans as flexible as possible to leave room for spontaneity.

Get Creative

Especially if you have a go-to hotel or resort, it can be tempting to fall into the same old vacation routine. So don’t be afraid to mix things up and think outside of the bedroom. Are there any new sex locales that pique your curiosity?
